Newark Castle CC Events – volunteers needed

Members / Cyclists,

You will have heard that Stage 4 of the Tour of Britain is coming to Newark.  In celebration of this, the Committee have been working hard behind the scenes.  Newark Castle CC is hosting a couple of events and supporting a couple of others as part of Newark and Sherwood DC ‘Festival of Cycling’.

In order to make these events a success, and to attract new riders to our sport and club, we will need your help to run them and make them safe for both riders and spectators :

  • Sunday 3rd September – we are running an open 25 mile TT – we need some club volunteers to help marshal this event – it is being run from 10am and would be a time commitment of some 3.5 hours.  Tea and coffee provided.  Please confirm your offer of help to me: paul.beaumont@fccenvironment.co.uk
  • Tuesday 5th September – we are bringing road racing back to Newark town centre in the form of a British Cycling Go Ride Race around the market square, around to Middle Gate and back into the market square.  This is a junior road race format ages up to 16 years old.  The town are really supporting this Festival of Cycling by putting on other entertainments that evening in the market square.  We should see this event as an opportunity to show case cycle racing, and if successful we could see it emerge as an annual event……..as it used to be….Newark has a rich heritage of cycle racing. We will also be looking to put on an event sponsors TT prologue to try and raise some funds for the club and charity. As such, we will need volunteers to help barrier up / tape the route, and then to line the route to ensure junior / rider safety.  Set up will be from 4-5pm, and racing concluding at 8.30pm.  Please confirm your offer of help to me: paul.beaumont@fccenvironment.co.uk
  • Thursday 7th September – ‘have a go’ TT – we will run a shortened 8 mile TT around our Flawborough course in the early evening – all left turns – same start / finish as the Grand Prix de Gentlemen.  This is to give members of the public the opportunity to try time trialling.  Volunteers are needed to marshal corners to assist with novice rider safety.  Please confirm your offer of help to Catherine: catherine.newarkccc@gmail.com
  • Saturday 9th September – ride in a peloton.  As part of our Saturday am club run, we are partnering with Newark Riders to put on a club run for solo road cyclists to join a group for a ride out.  Marketed as “If you have enjoyed road cycling on your own, come and try cycling as part of a peloton. Come and try cycling as part of a peloton – this no strings attached event with a café stop is a perfect way to experience a club atmosphere.”  It would be good to have club members out for this to join the ride and promote our club.

Finally, I know that NSDC will be looking for volunteers to help steward the actual Tour of Britain stage on the day – 6th September.  If you feel able to help on the day, please complete their volunteer form Volunteer Sign up form on the Council’s website.

More will follow on these events, but they will only be successful with all our club helping and participating.

Any queries, please email or call me.

Kind regards,

Paul

Newark Castle CC on the Radio

Our resident ex-pro Dave Miller has been on BBC Nottingham to talk about the Tour of Britain coming to Newark.

Please see link below – the Verity Cowley show 26th April starting at 16:00 – Dave’s bit is at 1hr 18mins in.

There will be a lot we will try to do as a club – exposure, promoting cycling, canvassing for the cycle track and getting as many involved in this event as possible.  This will evolve over the coming months.

Kind regards,

Paul

Junior Coaching - holiday and change in location

Dear Members,

I can confirm that we have now had our last coaching session at the Lilley and Stone site.

The Committee met this week and agreed a new temporary location for coaching sessions ahead of us moving to the new cycle track at the Sports Hub.

The new location will be North Muskham Village Hall / Sports Field.

As this is a completely new location, we will need some time to vacate Lilley and Stone and move all of our equipment to North Muskham.

With that in mind, we think it is best to now take the first 4 weeks of August as a break from coaching (we had previously communicated the last 2 weeks of August as a holiday).

We will meet again Tuesday 30th August 18:30 at North Muskham.  More will follow on the new venue, but parking is at the front of the hall, walk round to the left of the building and our signing in desk will be in one of the changing rooms at the rear.  We will then be coaching on the large field to the rear of the Hall.

Please bear with us whilst we move the club, and we look forward to seeing you after the break – have great summer.

Kind regards,

Paul
